Understanding Word Data

Learn about the components of dictionary data and how to use them.

Dictionary APIs provide rich linguistic data about words. Understanding the different components - definitions, pronunciation, etymology, and more - helps you build better language applications.

Parts of Speech

Words are classified by their grammatical function: nouns (person, place, thing), verbs (action), adjectives (describe nouns), adverbs (describe verbs), and more. Many words function as multiple parts of speech - "run" can be a verb (to run) or a noun (a run). Good dictionary APIs provide definitions for each part of speech separately.

Pronunciation (IPA)

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) provides a standardized way to represent pronunciation. Unlike spelling, IPA shows exactly how a word sounds. For example, "knight" is /naɪt/ - the silent "k" and "gh" are not represented. IPA is essential for text-to-speech systems and language learning.

Etymology

Etymology traces a word's origin and historical development. Many English words come from Latin, Greek, French, or Germanic roots. Understanding etymology helps with vocabulary building - related words often share roots. For example, "biology," "biography," and "biodegradable" all share the Greek root "bio" meaning life.

Word Frequency

Frequency scores indicate how commonly a word is used. Common words like "the" have high frequency; rare words like "defenestrate" have low frequency. This data helps with readability analysis, vocabulary difficulty grading, and suggesting simpler alternatives in writing tools.
