Grammar1

Part of Speech

A category of words with similar grammatical properties, such as noun, verb, adjective, or adverb.

English has eight main parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Many words can function as multiple parts of speech depending on context.

ExamplepartOfSpeech: "noun" (for "serendipity")

Phonetics2

IPA

pronunciation

International Phonetic Alphabet - a standardized system for representing the sounds of spoken language.

IPA uses symbols to represent each distinct sound in human languages. It's language-independent, meaning the same symbol represents the same sound regardless of the language. IPA is essential for accurate pronunciation in dictionaries and text-to-speech systems.

{ pronunciation: "/ˌserənˈdipədē/" }

Syllables

Units of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants.

Syllable count is useful for poetry, song lyrics, and readability analysis. Words are broken at natural pronunciation boundaries. For example, "serendipity" has five syllables: ser-en-dip-i-ty.

Examplesyllables: ["ser", "en", "dip", "i", "ty"]

Linguistics1

Etymology

etymology

The origin of a word and the historical development of its meaning.

Etymology traces words back to their roots in other languages or earlier forms of English. Understanding etymology helps with vocabulary building - words with shared roots often have related meanings. Many English words derive from Latin, Greek, French, and Germanic languages.

{ etymology: "From Greek 'syn' (together) + 'thesis' (placing)" }
Usage1

Word Frequency

A measure of how commonly a word is used in written or spoken language.

Frequency is typically measured on a logarithmic scale based on large text corpora. High-frequency words (the, is, and) appear constantly; low-frequency words (defenestrate, pulchritudinous) are rare. Frequency data helps with readability analysis and vocabulary grading.

Examplefrequency: 3.2 (moderate frequency)

Core1

Definition

definition

A statement of the exact meaning of a word.

Good definitions are concise yet comprehensive. They typically include the word's category (e.g., "a type of bird") and distinguishing characteristics. Words often have multiple definitions for different senses or parts of speech.

{ definition: "The occurrence of events by chance in a happy way" }
